Ordinary Dinners Made Extraordinary
My mom loves a bar. Not the kind with cocktails, although she’s definitely a fan of mojitos and margaritas.
I mean taco bars. Crostini bars. Baked potato bars. She has a long kitchen island and loves covering it with bowls of toppings. And she doesn’t just put everything out. There are little notecards telling you what’s what, usually with a few suggested combinations to build our own tacos.
She loves it because all the work happens beforehand. By the time everyone arrives, she’s done. People make their plates, go back for seconds and stand around the island talking. But every once in a while, she doesn’t want a bar.
She gets out the tablecloth and irons it. There are flowers and candles and the wine glasses that don’t come out for taco night. She wants everyone sitting around the same table and dinner served to them.
And, most importantly, she wants to sit down too.
That’s when she wants me. It’s also one of the reasons I created The Supper Club.
Because when you’re the one hosting dinner, you’re checking the oven while everyone else is talking. You’re tossing the salad, looking for the serving spoon, and wondering if the steak needs another three minutes.
It’s hard to enjoy your own party. But not when I cook a Supper Club dinner.
We plan the menu together, and I take it from there. I shop, cook, serve and clean up while you stay where you’re supposed to be—with the people you invited.
And the menu is yours. Maybe you want to recreate something you ate on your honeymoon. Maybe your family waits all year for Rhode Island seafood. Maybe you're a steak person and your husband wants scallops. I want to know those things. They’re what make your dinner your dinner.
And there are things you can only get at home. I’m talking your music and your candles. The wine you’ve been saving. And lingering over dessert far longer than you could at a restaurant. Sometimes my mom’s taco bar is exactly what the night calls for. Sometimes it's pizza on the counter. I love those nights too.
But birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, old friends finally getting together? Or even a Saturday night you just want to make a little less ordinary?
Those are the nights I want to cook for you.
